In the first half, the score was opened by Japanese striker Daizen Maeda. In the second half of the match, Ivan Perisic scored for the Croatia thanks to a lovely cross from Dejan Lovren.

Perisic scored the 6th goal of his career at the World Cup and equaled the famous striker Davor Šuker in the list of top scorers for Croatia at the World Cup. Perisic also has 10 goals for the Croatia in the final stages of major football tournaments (World Cup and European Championship).

During extra time Japan and Croatia were not able to find the winner. Everything came down to the penalty shootout.

Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic saved three of the four shots from Japanese players and brought Croatia a victory in the penalty shootout - 3:1.

Croatia will face Brazil in the World Cup quarter-finals.
